Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team gave No. 21 Marymount (Va.) University all
it could handle on Wednesday night at the Maggs Center as the Sea
Gulls battled with the Saints in a key Capital Athletic Conference
game. The Sea Gulls held an eight-point halftime advantage, 33-25,
and continued to hold a lead over the Saints eight minutes into the
second half. Marymount (Va.) closed out the final 12 minutes of the
game on a 29-10 run to win 65-49 on Coaches vs. Cancer night.
Salisbury (8-16, 8-7 CAC) was led by the impressive play of
freshmen guards Meghan Dunn (five rebounds) and
Glen Charlton (five rebounds, three steals) who
both tallied 14 points. Junior forward Kylie Hall
(seven rebounds) netted nine points and dished out a team-high four
assists. Junior forward Janay Johnson added a
team-high eight rebounds and six points.
The Sea Gulls were outstanding to start the game as Hall tallied
a jumper and foul shot to give SU a quick 3-0 lead. After a Saint
free-throw, Salisbury would tally the games' next four points as SU
led 7-1 at the 15:35 mark. SU would continue to hold its lead for a
majority of the first half but a layup by Kathleen Brown (20
points, 12 rebounds) capped a 5-0 Marymount run to drop the
Salisbury lead to just one point, 19-18, with a just under six
minutes to go in the half. The Sea Gulls were not phased as Dunn
scored eight points in the final four minutes to cap a 10-4 run to
end the half. Salisbury was aided by a 9-for-29 shooting effort (31
percent) from Marymount in the first half.
After the first two minutes of play in the second half,
Salisbury still held an eight-point lead, 35-27. Marymount came on
strong and tallied the next seven points of the game to drop
Salisbury's deficit to just one. SU would respond with a jumper by
Charlton but Marymount would come down the court and use a lay-up
by Terrell White (11 points, five assists) to drop the lead to one
again. A minute later, Dunn drilled a jumper at the 14:42 mark as
SU led 39-36. Salisbury squandered its lead as Marymount used a
10-0 run to take a seven-point lead, 46-39, with just over 10
minutes left. SU did not get within five points the rest of the way
as the Saints would cruise to their 20th victory of the
season. Marymount (20-4, 13-2 CAC) outscored Salisbury 40-16
in the second half.
Marymount was propelled by the efforts of Brown who registered
game-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (12). Kathryn Wilson
poured in 14 points while teammate Beth Wiggins added nine
rebounds, five assists and two steals. The Saints had eight blocks
in the game as Brown and Wiggins both collected four apiece.
Salisbury will finish out its regular season at home as the Sea
Gulls host its "Pink Zone" game on Saturday, February 21, as the
Sea Gulls host Hood College at 2 p.m. The first 100 fans will
receive free Pink Zone t-shirts. SU is encouraging fans to wear
something pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
