DOVER, Del. - The fifth-seed Salisbury
University women's basketball team fell to fourth-seed Wesley
College, 71-50, in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) tournament
quarterfinal round on Tuesday evening at Wentworth Gym. Salisbury
concludes its season with a 9-17 record while the Wolverines
(15-11) advance to Thursday's semifinal round and a match up
against top-seed seed York (Pa.) College, who is also ranked No. 5
in the nation.
Salisbury was paced by junior forward Kylie
Hall who registered her ninth double-double of the season
with an 18-point, 12-rebound performance. Eight of Hall's 12
rebounds came on the offensive end of the court. Junior forward
Janay Johnson and freshman guard Katharine
Curran each scored 12 points while Curran passed out three
assists.
Salisbury was able to jump out to an early lead after a jumper
from Hall followed by some free-throws and a jumper from freshman
guard Glen Charlton. Wesley found its rhythm as
the Wolverines went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes. The
Wolverines would continue to increase their lead the rest of the
half. The lead grew to 17 before Salisbury went on a six-point run
of its own to close the half down 42-31.
In the second half, Wesley kept a comfortable lead over
Salisbury. The Wolverines shot 58 percent from the field for the
game and drained eight three-pointers. The Gulls struggled to find
their shooting touch as they shot 32.8 percent from the field. The
Wolverines led by as many as 26 points in the second half.
Salisbury outrebounded Wesley 38-33 in the game.
Wesley was led by sophomore guard Cory Boyd who scored a
game-high 20 points and made six assists. Sophomore forward Angie
Owens recorded a double-double as she finished with 15 points and
10 rebounds. Junior guard Michele Mules was the final Wolverine in
double-digits as she scored 13 points.
The future looks bright for the Sea Gulls as they have no
seniors on this year's team and are slated to return all eight
letterwinners from this year's squad in 2009-10. Salisbury won
eight of its final 12 games to close out the 2008-09 season.
