SU opens Invitational with 8-0 victory over Frostburg

SALISBURY, Md. - Junior midfielder Courtney Webster (Chance, Md.) tallied a career-high three goals as the No. 6 Salisbury University field hockey team blanked Frostburg State University, 8-0, in the first game of the SU Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. The shutout was the third of the season registered by Salisbury as SU has limited to their opponents to just one goal in 280 minutes.

Salisbury (4-0) jumped out to a quick, 1-0, lead over Frostburg (2-2) at the 12:29 mark of the first period on Webster's first goal of the game. The margin would remain the same until 15 minutes later when SU extended its lead with a goal by freshman midfielder Kristina Fusco (Forest Hill, Md.). SU opened the floodgates a short time later when the Sea Gulls scored three times over the next two minutes with goals by sophomore forward Allison Bloodsworth (Delmar, Md.), Fusco, and Webster.

Webster opened up the scoring in the second half as she tallied her third goal of the game just one minute into the period. The final two goals of the game for SU were scored by senior midfielder Caitlyn Ruffus (Lincroft, N.J.) and freshman back Katie Matteo (Arnold, Md.). The goals were each the first of their collegiate careers.

The SU defense was dominant throughout game as the Sea Gulls limited the Bobcats to just two shots, none of which were on goal. Sophomore netminder Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) picked up her third win of the season.

Frostburg was led in the contest by goalkeeper Maggie Edwards, who collected 17 saves. Brandi Mixell and Brooke Tapman collected one shot apiece for the Bobcats.

The Sea Gulls look to continue their winning ways when they host Ursinus College tomorrow, Sunday, September 13, at 2 p.m.  The meeting between the two teams will be the first since Salisbury defeated Ursinus, 3-0, in the NCAA Semifinals in 2005.
