OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's soccer team avoided its third straight overtime game and
another potential scoreless tie as sophomore forward Amanda
Zyzak (Damascus, Md.)tallied an
unassisted goal midway through the second half to lead the Sea
Gulls to a 1-0 victory over Stevenson University in their Capital
Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The game proved
to be SU's fifth consecutive shutout as the Sea Gulls have limited
their opponents to just one goal the entire season.
Salisbury (3-1-2, 1-0 CAC) was impressive on offense as the Sea
Gulls blasted 28 shots, 12 of which were on goal. Sophomore
Sarah Jessilonis (Pasadena, Md.) poured in six
shots (three on goal) while senior Christina Eury
(Germantown, Md.) and sophomore Danielle
Crowley (Flanders, N.J.) each contributed
with four shots apiece. SU freshman goalkeeper, Melissa
Orgera (Arnold, Md.) made five saves to record her third
win of the year.
Stevenson (4-2-1, 1-1 CAC) was led by Stephanie Eyler, who
notched four shots (three on goal). Taylor Zimmerman and Melinda
Kane each contributed with two shots. Lauren Weitzman was saddled
with the loss after collecting a game-high 11 saves.
SU posted a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and held a 7-1 margin
in fouls.
Salisbury will hit the road in its next contest against CAC foe
Wesley College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. before returning
home to host three consecutive matches at the SU Soccer Complex.
