Charlton nets game-winner as Sea Gulls come back to defeat Seahawks, 56-55

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - What looked like another loss for the Salisbury University women's basketball team turned into a furious comeback as the Sea Gulls took down Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's (Md.) College, 56-55, on Saturday afternoon at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

Salisbury struggled to get the ball in the paint as the St. Mary's 2-3 zone defense cluttered the lane; the Sea Gulls shot just 25% from the floor in the first half. The Seahawks took an intimidating 16-point advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Sea Gulls (6-10, 3-6 CAC) were unfazed, going on a 25-5 scoring run in the second half and taking their first lead of the half, 54-53, with just 44 seconds left to play in the game. St. Mary's forward Taylor Petrisko set up at the top of the paint and hit a jumper to regain the lead for the Seahawks (5-12, 4-5 CAC) with just 25 seconds remaining, but Salisbury maintained its composure. After a timeout, the maroon and gold inbounded the ball to sophomore guard KC Curran (Malvern, Pa.), who dished it to fellow sophomore guard Glen Charlton (Landover, Md.). With just four seconds left to play and the St. Mary's defense closing in, Charlton set her feet and hit a nothing-but-net jumper to give the Sea Gulls the one-point victory. Curran, who finished with four assists, netted 14 points in the Sea Gull comeback. 12 of her points came from behind the three-point arc. Charlton finished with seven points.

Additionally, freshman Nicole Sisco (Fairlawn, N.J.) had a career night with four blocks. The other Sea Gull besides Curran to hit double-digits, junior guard Chante' McKinney (Gaithersburg, Md.), scored 12 points in the victory. Two of those points couldn't have come at a better time, as McKinney missed a jump shot before grabbing her own rebound and netting a lay-up to give the Sea Gulls their first of two leads in the second half.

The Sea Gulls will look to continue their winning ways as they hit the road to play at CAC opponent Hood College on Jan. 27. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Sea Gull fans planning to travel to the game, which will be played on a military installation, should pay special attention to the regulations in place.
