Box Score WESLEY, Del. – The No. 18-ranked
Salisbury University men's soccer team captured a 2-0 Capital
Athletic Conference victory over host Wesley College on Wednesday
night. The Sea Gulls (11-1-3, 5-1 CAC) have now recorded nine
shutout victories this season.
Salisbury had a great first half of play, but was unable to
breakthrough on the Wesley defense. SU had a good scoring chance in
the 44th minute as junior forward Ian Wilson
had a breakaway opportunity, but pushed the ball just wide of the
Wesley (4-9-1, 1-4 CAC) goal. In the first half of play, the Sea
Gulls held a 6-2 shots advantage and 2-0 corner kicks
advantage.
The Sea Gulls broke through in the 53rd minute, as senior
midfielder Dave
Corrigan directed a cross onto the head of senior
forward Mike
Napolitano. Napolitano headed home the ball for his
team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Sea Gulls added an
insurance tally just a minute later, as this time Corrigan finished
a Justin
Lambert pass for his second goal of the season.
Wesley's best opportunity to score came in the 61st minute, as Matt
Nimmerichter's shot banged off the crossbar. For the match,
Salisbury finished with a 15-7 shots advantage and earned three
corner kicks compared to just one for Wesley.
SU sophomore goalkeeper John
Vnenchak earned his sixth win of the season as he
played the full 90 minutes and tallied one save. Wesley's Nick
Talarico finished with seven saves in 90 minutes of
action.
The Sea Gulls will return to the SU Soccer Complex this Saturday
for a CAC contest with the University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
The game is part of the University's Homecoming
festivities.
