Sea Gulls power past Wolverines with 2-0 CAC victory

Box Score

WESLEY, Del. – The No. 18-ranked Salisbury University men's soccer team captured a 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Wesley College on Wednesday night. The Sea Gulls (11-1-3, 5-1 CAC) have now recorded nine shutout victories this season.

Salisbury had a great first half of play, but was unable to breakthrough on the Wesley defense. SU had a good scoring chance in the 44th minute as junior forward Ian Wilson had a breakaway opportunity, but pushed the ball just wide of the Wesley (4-9-1, 1-4 CAC) goal. In the first half of play, the Sea Gulls held a 6-2 shots advantage and 2-0 corner kicks advantage.

The Sea Gulls broke through in the 53rd minute, as senior midfielder Dave Corrigan directed a cross onto the head of senior forward Mike Napolitano. Napolitano headed home the ball for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Sea Gulls added an insurance tally just a minute later, as this time Corrigan finished a Justin Lambert pass for his second goal of the season. Wesley's best opportunity to score came in the 61st minute, as Matt Nimmerichter's shot banged off the crossbar. For the match, Salisbury finished with a 15-7 shots advantage and earned three corner kicks compared to just one for Wesley.

SU sophomore goalkeeper John Vnenchak earned his sixth win of the season as he played the full 90 minutes and tallied one save. Wesley's Nick Talarico finished with seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Sea Gulls will return to the SU Soccer Complex this Saturday for a CAC contest with the University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m. The game is part of the University's Homecoming festivities.
