Salisbury University field hockey team clinched the top seed in the
Capital Athletic Conference tournament with an 11-1 win against
conference opponent Frostburg State University on Saturday morning.
The 11 goals scored marks a season-high for the Sea
Gulls.
Salisbury (12-2, 6-0 CAC) wasted no time getting on the board as
junior midfielder Courtney
Webster scored off of an assist from senior back
Katie
Fost just 2:13 into the contest. In the 8th minute of
play, a scramble in front of the Frostburg cage led to the Sea
Gulls' second goal of the day, off the stick of sophomore forward
Erica Henderson. Exactly one minute later
junior forward Caitlin
Walker made it a 3-0 game, capitalizing on one of
Salisbury's 10 first-half penalty corner opportunities.
Over 10 minutes elapsed without another Sea Gull goal, but
Webster broke the seal in the 18th minute to improve Salisbury's
lead to four. Just over one minute later, senior forward Katy
Lamboni chipped in the maroon and gold's fifth goal.
The Sea Gulls' sixth and seventh scores, 47 seconds apart, came
from junior forward Alison
Bloodsworth to give Salisbury a 7-0 lead going into
the second half. The seven first-half goals tied a season-high for
Salisbury. Frostburg (3-16, 1-6 CAC) was able to get just one shot
off in the first half of the contest, while Salisbury took 21 (16
of which were on-goal).
The Bobcats scored their first and only goal in 39th minute of
the game, but Salisbury continued its barrage of shots on Frostburg
goalkeeper Maggie Edwards (18 saves). Goals by sophomore forward
Melissa
Slocum and junior midfielder Danielle
Lehman improved Salisbury's lead to 9-1 with over 13
minutes left to play. The final two goals of the game, off the
sticks of freshman forward Hannah
Castelow and Lehman, pushed Salisbury over the 10-goal
threshold. Castelow's goal marked the first of her collegiate
career.
Salisbury outshot Frostburg 38-6 and held a 12-7 advantage in
penalty corner opportunities. Junior keeper Anna
Cooke made five saves. The maroon and gold have
outscored their opponents 58-10 so far this season.
The victory secures a first-round bye and home-field advantage
for Salisbury in the CAC tournament, which begins on Oct. 31. The
Sea Gulls have won 15 consecutive CAC championships, dating back to
1995.
The Sea Gulls return home to wrap up regular-season conference
play with a game against Wesley College on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 6
