Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team kicked off the 2010-11 season in style Monday night, taking down Rowan University, 86-76, at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The Sea Gulls (1-0) got double-figure scoring performances from three different players, including two 20-point efforts.
Rowan (0-1) took an early 3-2 lead, but Salisbury put together a 9-4 run to pull ahead by four points four minutes into the contest. The Sea Gulls would not trail again in the game. Salisbury pushed the lead to as many as eight in the first half, as senior Chante' McKinney buried her first three-point field goal of the season with 9:38 showing on the clock to give her team a 22-14 lead.
Salisbury was deadly from outside, connecting on 8-of-20 three-pointers on the night, led by KC Curran's 3-for-10 performance. Along with hitting the three triples, Curran was 7-for-9 from the charity stripe, finishing with 22 points. She also chipped in with six rebounds and five assists.
Salisbury held a four-point lead at halftime, and despite playing with numerous players in foul trouble, the Sea Gull defense held strong, protecting the lead. Rowan tied the game twice in the second half, but each time Salisbury answered with points on the next possession. Both times it was sophomore Emily Bowles getting to the foul line and connecting on a pair of free throws. Bowles came up just short of a double-double in her Sea Gull debut, scoring nine points and adding eight rebounds.
Bowles was not the only Sea Gull crashing the boards as five players finished with at least six rebounds. Salisbury held a 48-22 edge on the boards, an area the Sea Gulls have dominated in recent years.
Junior guard Glen Charlton led all scorers with 23 points in the game to go with seven rebounds. The 23 points matches her career high and the seven boards is a new career mark. McKinney put up 15 points and six assists while junior Milan Dry added eight points and eight rebounds.
The victory avenges an 80-55 loss during the 2009-10 season to the Profs in a game played in Glassboro, N.J.
Salisbury will take its act on the road this weekend, kicking off a stretch of three-straight road games. The Sea Gulls will play Averett University and Johns Hopkins University at the Blue Jays' tournament before heading to Stevenson University for their Capital Athletic Conference opener on November 23.
