Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the 2010-11 season on Wednesday night, falling to Marymount (Va.) University at Maggs Physical Activities Center, 85-70.
Despite getting five double-digit scoring performances, the Gulls could not overcome the strong shooting and rebounding of the Saints (2-4, 2-1 CAC).
Salisbury fell into a 21-9 hole after nearly nine minutes of play, and was forced to battle from behind the rest of the way, but could never take the lead despite making a number of runs to within striking distance.
A 14-3 Salisbury run over five minutes in the first half whittled the Gulls' (3-5, 2-1 CAC) deficit to just three points, 26-23; junior guard KC Curran buried a three-pointer to cap the run. But Salisbury would see a Marymount spurt at the end of the half allow the Saints to take a 40-32 lead at the break.
Curran scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half to go with three assists and a pair of steals on the night.
An 8-0 run early in the second half allowed the Gulls to get within a point, as junior guard Milan Dry connected on a jumper to cut the Saints' lead to 50-49 with 12:57 left in the game, but Salisbury would get no closer.
Dry finished with a team-high 18 points and six rebounds while senior Chante' McKinney added 11 points. Junior Glen Charlton scored 12 and sophomore Katie McGahagan tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.
Senior Maame Amponsah led the way for Marymount with 20 points and 19 rebounds while Amanda Billy and Jackie Bohenek each scored 21. Beth Wiggins also pulled in 15 rebounds as the Saints held a 46-37 edge on the glass.
Salisbury will have one more home date before the winter break, as the Sea Gulls host Goucher College on the Saturday, Dec. 11, with the tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
