Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - It was a very
special night for the two seniors on the Salisbury University
women's basketball team, who played in their final home contest of
the regular-season against Capital Athletic Conference opponent
Wesley College. Despite a furious comeback in the second half the
Sea Gulls fell to the Wolverines, 62-56.
It was an all-out battle from the tip-off, as both teams
sprinted down the floor in an effort to rack up the points.
Wesley's arsenal of three-point shooters gave the Wolverines (15-9,
9-6 CAC) a distinct advantage in scoring, compounded by Salisbury's
struggle to get in the paint. Salisbury (9-14, 6-9 CAC) trailed by
13 at the half; senior forwards Kylie
Hall and Janay
Johnson, both Baltimore, Md., natives, netted a
combined nine points and pulled down nine rebounds in the first 20
minutes of play. Additionally, Johnson had four steals. Sophomore
guard KC Curran (Malvern, Pa.) led the team
in points in the first half, with eight. She went 2-for-3 from
outside of the three-point arc.
The second half was a far cry from the first half, as the Sea
Gulls cranked up the aggression and began to close the scoring gap.
In just over eight minutes of second-half play, Salisbury was able
to get within four points of Wesley; the contributing factor in the
scoring rush was a slew of Salisbury steals in Wesley territory
that were subsequently converted into lay-ups. The Sea Gulls pulled
to within a single point with under four minutes left to play, but
the Wolverines were able to pull away and preserve the victory.
Salisbury's defense was nothing short of outstanding in the
second half. Wolverines Cory Boyd and Angie Owens scored a combined
21 points, going 8-for-17 from the floor, in the first half. In the
second half, they went 1-for-5 and scored just seven points.
Freshman forward Nicole
Sisco (Fairlawn, N.J.) scored 14 points, pulled down
11 rebounds and had a team-high five steals in the game. Sophomore
guard Glen Charlton (Landover, Md.) was an
integral part of the Sea Gulls' valiant comeback effort; of her
team-high 15 points, 13 were scored in the second half.
The Sea Gulls will be on the road for their final regular-season
game, against CAC opponent Mary Washington, on Saturday. Tip-off is
set for 3 p.m.
