Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball squad captured its first win of 2011 on Wednesday night, rallying back after a first-half deficit to defeat Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College by a score of 49-46.
Salisbury (5-9, 3-3 CAC) struck first in the contest as junior guard Glen Charlton sprinted the floor and caught a booming pass from sophomore guard Katie McGahagan for an easy lay-up. The Sea Gulls netted the first four points of the game before the Wolverines (7-7, 2-3 CAC) evened up the score. That story would repeat itself throughout the first half as the teams exchanged baskets to keep the score relatively close.
The Wolverines would begin to pull away, eventually taking a 20-12 lead with 5:43 remaining in the first half, but a strong Sea Gull offensive push brought Salisbury's deficit to just one point by the time the buzzer sounded.
The maroon and gold regained the lead just over one minute into the second half off a pair of free throws from junior guard KC Curran. Those points seemed to mark a shift in the game's momentum as Salisbury cranked up its offense and tightened its defense, pulling away to lead by as many as six points. The Sea Gulls would hold on to that lead, despite a last-second effort by Wesley, to earn the "W".
McGahagan was a huge contributor to the Sea Gull cause, netting a career- and team-high 21 points along with 13 rebounds to register a double-double.
The Sea Gulls' next contest will be at home, against CAC opponent York (Pa.) College, on Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. It also marks the team's annual "Alumni Day".
