Sea Gulls fall at Wesley College 71-59 in CAC contest

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team fell to host Wesley College 71-59 on Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.

In the first 14 minutes of the first stanza, neither team could seem to break away as each team took turns holding the lead. The Sea Gulls (7-11, 4-5 CAC) held a five-point advantage twice during that time, but the Wolverines (9-10, 4-6 CAC) came back each time. Over the last six minutes of action, Wesley created breathing room by going on a 10-2 run that gave the hosts a 38-28 lead as the two teams headed for their respective locker rooms.

The Sea Gulls had their chances to get back into the game in the second half, with the best opportunity coming at the 8:04 mark. Sophomore forward Katie McGahagan converted a jumper off an assist from senior guard Chante' McKinney to cut the lead to 58-53. SU won the ball back after a Wesley turnover, but a Wesley steal ended Salisbury's offensive chance. The Wolverines outscored the Sea Gulls 13-6 the rest of the way to bring the score to its final.

McKinney led the way for the maroon and gold in the contest, as she scored a team-high 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Junior guard Milan Dry and sophomore forward Nicole Sisco each tallied 12 points and eight rebounds. Sisco also finished with a career-high five blocks in the contest.

Wesley was paced by Cory Boyd, who tallied a game-high 19 points and seven assists. Angie Owens (16 points), Jazmine Miller (13 points) and Allison Beddia (12 points) each recorded double-digit point totals in the victory.

The Sea Gulls are set to host Stevenson University this Monday at 6 p.m. at the Maggs Physical Activities Center. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 26, but was postponed twice due to inclement weather over the last week.
