Sea Gulls shut down Marymount in 53-39 road win

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team shot right at its season average, 33.3 percent from the floor, Wednesday night at Marymount (Va.) University, but the Sea Gulls were deadly from downtown, connecting on 53.8 percent of their three-pointers to take down the second-place team in the Capital Athletic Conference, 53-39.

The win against the Saints (9-8, 7-4 CAC) is Salisbury's first since Feb. 14, 2007, snapping an eight-game losing streak in the series.

After Marymount took an early 6-3 lead Wednesday night, the Gulls (8-12, 5-6 CAC) put together an 11-2 run to take a six-point lead. Salisbury would hold that lead until the break, closing the first half on a 9-0 run; the Sea Gulls connected on four of their final six field goal attempts in the half. Sophomore Katie McGahagan converted the final five points before halftime for the Gulls, including a three-pointer with 41 seconds remaining. The triple was McGahagan's third of the season and gave Salisbury a 29-17 edge at the break.

McGahagan scored just the five points in the game, but was good for a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Salisbury defense held Marymount without a field goal for a stretch of nearly 10 minutes beginning in the first half and not ending until 13:58 remained in the game. Salisbury was able to make its run 15-1 in that time, and take a 17-point lead, 35-18.

The lead would grow no bigger, but the Saints could only get as close as nine points the rest of the way, with the Sea Gull defense limiting Marymount to 29.6 percent shooting from the floor in the game – Salisbury's best defensive effort this season.

Juniors KC Curran and Glen Charlton led Salisbury's attack from outside as each player hit three shots from beyond the arc in five attempts. Charlton finished with 17 points, to go with four steals, while Curran scored 11 points. Junior Milan Dry scored 10 points for the Sea Gulls and pulled down eight rebounds.

Maame Amponsah scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Marymount in the loss.

The Sea Gulls will host their next three games, beginning this Saturday, when the University of Mary Washington comes to Maggs Physical Activities Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
