Sea Gulls soar past Eagles in home opener

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 Salisbury University field hockey team scored four goals in the first 35 minutes of its home opener to defeat No. 16 Juniata College, 4-1, on Saturday evening at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury (4-0) scored in the first minute of the game to get the ball rolling off the stick of senior Courtney Webster and just 88 seconds later junior Alison Bloodsworth capitalized on a pass from fellow senior Caitlin Walker to bring the score to 2-0.

SU would strike again in the 16th minute when Webster collected her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Bloodsworth. The fourth goal and final goal for SU was scored with five minutes left in the half by junior Melissa Slocum, her first goal of the season. The Sea Gulls controlled the field offensively taking nine shots against the Eagles' (2-1) four in the first half.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle, however, as Salisbury maintained an edge in both corners (8-6) and shots (13-9). Juniata's Shauna Deschenes scored the only goal of the second half to bring the final score to 4-1.

The maroon and gold had three defensive saves in the match.

Salisbury's next contest will be on Wednesday, Sept. 14, against Johns Hopkins University. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
