GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – In the Gwynedd Mercy College Tip-Off Tournament consolation game, the Salisbury University women's basketball team saw 12 Sea Gulls notch points against Penn State University-Abington as SU cruised to a 90-54 victory.

Salisbury (1-1) came out strong against Abington, scoring the contest's first points with strong pressure from the defense, resulting in a Nittany Lion turnover, as sophomore point guard Anna Hackett picked up a steal and an assist when classmate Maggie King put in an easy layup for the 2-0 lead.

Pressure from the Sea Gulls overwhelmed the Nittany Lions in the opening minutes as SU quickly pulled ahead to an 8-0 advantage. Salisbury's tenacious defense resulted in five turnovers early on, allowing its offense to make quick breaks down the court for three consecutive layups before senior forward Katie McGahagan pulled down an offensive rebound and scored from the paint. McGahagan drew a foul on the play and made the free throw to push SU's lead to 11-0.

Abington (0-2) would score its first field goal of the half as Teharah Worrell put up two for the Nittany Lions, ending the scoring drought, 13-2, nearly four minutes into the contest.

In the first five minutes of play, King put up seven points, including a shot from beyond the arc, to put SU up by 17.

Salisbury's distribution of the ball on the offensive side of the court paid off as eight different Sea Gulls scored in the opening 20 minutes. Freshman forward Julia McLaughlin led the charge with 12 points off the bench as the Sea Gulls ended the half with a 56-23 lead.

The Sea Gulls would continue to dominate play in the final period, building a 72-37 advantage with 10 minutes left in the contest. Aggressive play off the boards gave SU its largest lead of the game, as junior forward Becca Himes brought down a defensive rebound and then found freshman forward Kathy Albornoz for two as Salisbury went up by 39 points, 76-37.

Abington came back with eight unanswered points before Salisbury soared away to a 90-54 victory.

Salisbury scored 56 points in the paint and was perfect from the free-throw line (11-for-11). McLaughlin paced the Sea Gulls with 18 points with McGahagan (11), Hackett (10) and Albornoz (10) turning in double-digit efforts.

Hackett was named to the All-Tournament team after putting up 34 points throughout the tournament with 13 assists and five steals.

The Nittany Lions saw Worrell put up 18 points while Jessica Schmidt followed with 14.

SU returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as the Sea Gulls host their home opener against Virginia Wesleyan College at 5:30 p.m.
