Sea Gulls pick up 8-1 victory in first home CAC match

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 25 Salisbury University men's soccer team displayed its offensive firepower on Wednesday in the team's first home Capital Athletic Conference match, an 8-1 victory over Marymount (Va.) University.

The Saints (2-3-2) opened the scoring with a goal in the third minute of the game from Max Banziger to take a 1-0 lead over the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury (6-1-1) took the first 30 minutes to find the back of the net, but once sophomore defender Logan Becker netted his first score to tie the game, 1-1, the Sea Gull offense was sparked and never looked back. Becker finished a header off a Chase Humphrey free kick from the right side to square the contest.

Sophomore forward Tanner East took control off a loose ball after a Marymount turnover and gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season just five minutes after Becker's score to give Salisbury the advantage at halftime.

At the half, Salisbury was dominating the shot count, 8-1, and the corner kick margin, 2-0.

Salisbury opened the half with two quick goals from senior forward Adrian Tombini. Tombini took a long, well-placed pass from junior midfielder Adam Quigley in the 47th minute to score, and, just over 10 minutes later, senior midfielder Pat Callahan sent a pass into the box and Tombini beat the Marymount keeper, giving the Gulls a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore foward Matt Greene, freshman midfielder Chris Kittelberger and freshman forward Taylor Groginski (two goals) combined for the Sea Gulls' final four scores late in the game to cap off the win.

Senior goalkeeper John Vnenchak played 69 minutes in the net for Salisbury to earn the victory while making two saves.

Salisbury will be playing again on Saturday at the SU Soccer Complex in a CAC match against the University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
