Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 7 Salisbury University field hockey team earned a key Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 8 University of Mary Washington, 4-0.
Freshman Yumi Kim continued her hot streak, netting two goals and leading the Salisbury (10-3, 3-1 CAC) attack with five shots. Over the last week, in three contests, Kim has scored five of the Sea Gulls' 12 goals.
Salisbury played the Eagles even in the first half, with neither team getting on the scoreboard. The Sea Gulls came out strong in the second half to hand Mary Washington its first loss of the season.
Following a first half that saw the Sea Gulls outshoot Mary Washington (13-1, 2-1 CAC) 8-5, Salisbury broke the scoreless tie just 3:03 into the second half when Kim dribbled through the Eagle defense to beat the Mary Washington goalie.
After over 38 minutes without putting home a goal, the Sea Gulls didn't wait long to pad their lead. Just 4:47 after Kim put the Gulls on the board, sophomore Courtney Jantzen added an unassisted goal for a 2-0 Salisbury lead.
Combined with a strong defensive effort, the Sea Gulls would not settle on offense, pushing ahead to keep the Eagles on the defensive. At the 51:57 mark, Salisbury would increase its lead when junior Summer Washburn settled an inserted corner by sophomore Samantha Johnson for a 3-0 advantage for the maroon and gold.
The scoring effort for the afternoon was wrapped up by Kim, who put home a rebound off the pads of the Eagle goalie in the final minute of play.
For the contest, the Sea Gulls outshot Mary Washington 13-8, while attempting three more penalty corners.
Junior Rachel Clewer earned her second shutout of the season, turning away four Eagle shots.
The Sea Gulls return to Sea Gull Stadium for a midweek clash against St. Mary's College of Maryland. That game, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
