Gulls crowned regular-season champions with 3-0 shutout

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – In the final regular season match of the season, the No. 10 Salisbury University men's soccer team blanked Wesley College, 3-0, on senior day, to remain undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference play and extend its winning streak to 11.

With the victory, their 16th on the season, the men sit atop the conference as regular-season champions and break the regular-season win record in program history, set in 2004 at 15.

The Sea Gulls (16-2, 8-0 CAC) put on a strong offensive charge early in the match, putting on nine shots before finding the back of the net. In the final minute of the first half, senior Jake Perry blasted home the first goal from the top of the 18-yard box off a feed by junior Benjamin Aryeetey. Perry's game winner is his third of the season.

Taking the field for the second half with a 10-2 shot differential, junior Stephen Poorman and Aryeetey added two more goals to put away the Wolverines (8-9-2, 3-5 CAC).

In the 56th minute, senior Trevor Sharpe played in a pass from the right side of the box to an approaching Poorman for a six-yard put away. The hook up is Poorman's fifth goal of the season, while Sharpe recorded his fourth assist.

With eight minutes remaining in the game, Aryeetey broke down the field past the defense for a one-on-one with Wesley goalkeeper Mark Mattern. The Ghana native played it low and left on a diving Mattern to seal the victory. Aryeetey finished the day with a goal and an assist, totaling four and three for the season, respectively.

For the match, Salisbury outshot the Wolverines, 21-6, with nine on goal to Wesley's two.

The backline led by juniors Kyle Westbrook, Logan Becker and Jeff Byrnes displayed why they are ranked No. 2 in the nation for shutout percentage (.71), adding their 13th clean sheet through 18 matches. Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Staedeli recorded the victory in the net, moving his overall record to 16-2. He now ties former player Jason Cranford for second place in most wins by a goalkeeper in an individual season in program history.

Prior to the match, the six seniors, Larry Cornish, Perry, Sharpe, Chase Humphrey, Elliott Crompton, and captain Adam Quigley, were recognized for their outstanding representation of Salisbury University and the years dedicated to the men's soccer program.

The men enter the postseason as the top seed in the conference, excluding them from first-round play. SU has earned home-field advantage for the semifinal game next Wednesday, Nov. 6, awaiting the winner of the Frostburg State University–University of Mary Washington matchup set for Saturday, Nov. 2. Salisbury will also host the championship match on Nov. 9, should it advance through the semifinal match.
