Blistering offense puts away Hunter, helps claim Elmer Lord title

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Outstanding offense helped boost the Salisbury University men's soccer team over Hunter College, 10-0, to land the first place trophy in the Elmer Lord Classic.

Eight Sea Gulls were able to place the ball in the back of the net Saturday afternoon, led by junior forward Tanner East who capitalized on three for a hat trick in the match.

The scoring started early for Salisbury as East picked up his first goal in the sixth minute off a deflected shot from senior midfielder Adam Quigley. East wasted no time on his next goal capping off a flawless cross by junior forward Matt Greene from the right side of the 18-yard box to move the score to 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Junior midfielder Stephen Poorman gave the Sea Gulls a comfortable lead over the Hawks going into halftime with a pick up on the back side off a deflection from the goalkeeper giving Salisbury a three-goal lead.

The intensity picked up in the second half as the Gulls placed in seven more tallies to put away Hunter for the match.

In the 70th minute, Salisbury placed two in the back of the net within 30 seconds of one another. Freshman midfielder Nicholas McCrea notched the first one with a great fake out on the Hawk's goalkeeper for an easy placement. Greene then received a pass from teammate Michael Black 21 seconds later for a low liner into the goal.

Other goals scored were by Quigley, junior Benjamin Aryeetey, sophomore Taylor Groginski, and freshman Tyler Andrus.

Salisbury totaled 25 shots on goal off of 52 overall.

The defense held strong once again as it seized the Hawks from giving up a single shot in the match.

The Sea Gulls were awarded first place for the tournament, as well as senior midfielder Elliott Crompton earned Most Valuable Player honors.

The men head on the road for a five-game series. First stop is Chestertown, Md., on Wednesday, September 4, as the men match up with the Shoremen of Washington College. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m., on Kibler Field.
