Elliott's hat trick leads Salisbury in strong second half performance, 5-1 win against Elizabethtown

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team claimed a 5-1 win against Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Blue Jays 4-0 in a dominant second half, including a hat trick by junior Mallory Elliott.

The teams played nearly even in the first half, with Salisbury (5-1) holding a narrow 10-7 edge in shots. The Blue Jays got on the board first, scoring just over three minutes into the contest.

Jacki Hikes inserted on one of four Elizabethtown penalty corners of the first half, sending the ball to Taylor Alwine at the top of the circle. Alwine took the shot, putting the ball in the left side of the goal for a 1-0 Blue Jay advantage.

The lead remained intact for 10 minutes before Salisbury came up with a goal from sophomore Courtney Jantzen. Salisbury worked the ball inside the circle, near Elizabethtown goalkeeper Marlena Johnson. The Blue Jay defense kept the ball off of Johnson until it trickled to Jantzen in front. The Cockeysville, Md., native finished off her chance for the equalizer.

The halftime break brought Salisbury to life, as the Sea Gulls dominated play in the final 35 minutes, taking any doubt out of the outcome in the first three minutes of the second half.

Elliott got the first of her three goals just two minutes into the second half. Sophomore Samantha Johnson carried the ball into the right side of the circle, along the end line before putting the ball in front for Elliott. The Delmar, Del., native took a sweeping swing at the ball, popping it into the top-left corner of the cage for a 2-1 lead.

It took just 29 seconds for the insurance tally from senior Emily Voshell, who finished an assist from classmate Jessica Seay, prompting a quick timeout from Elizabethtown (3-3).

Salisbury controlled possession throughout the second half, doubling the Blue Jays in shot attempts, 14-7.

Elliott would be responsible for the remainder of the scoring, putting in her second and third goals exactly two minutes apart. The first came off a Voshell shot which was saved by Marlena Johnson with just under 19 minutes showing on the clock. Elliott pounded home the rebound for the 4-1 lead.

She capped the scoring two minutes later as freshman Yumi Kim found Elliott in front of the net for the 5-1 advantage.

Junior Rachel Clewer played the first 59:25 in goal for Salisbury, making four saves, while freshman Kate Russo spent the remainder of the match in goal, making a career-high three saves.

Salisbury will be back at Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday night, hosting Johns Hopkins University. That game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
