Men's soccer opens conference play with 1-0 victory over Frostburg St.

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. -- Junior forward Tanner East cashed in his team-leading fourth goal to give the No. 24 Salisbury University men's soccer team its first conference win of the season against Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon from the SU Soccer Complex.

Frostburg was the first to see an opportunity after sophomore goalkeeper Drew Staedeli found his way out of the goal. The Bobcats' Pablo Torrano took a shot on what seemed to be an empty goal, but defenders Chase Humphrey and Kyle Westbrook were in the right position at the right time to block the attempt.

The Sea Gulls capitalized late in the first half after taking nine shots prior to the goal. Freshman midfielder Billy Fowler received the ball off a clear right outside of the 18-yard box. Pulling it down in perfect form, Fowler was able to give a nice lead into the middle where East connected for a low-liner into the right side of the net.

Going into the half with the momentum and a one-goal lead, Salisbury (8-2, 1-0 CAC) managed to outshoot the Bobcats, 10-2.

In the second period, Frostburg (6-2, 0-1 CAC) saw an opportunity to draw the score even after a penalty kick was awarded to the Bobcats. Frostburg's leading goal scorer Kunle Akinfeleye faced Staedeli on the chance, but pushed the shot left.

Staedeli finished the match with four saves. The Ellicott City, Md., native is now 8-2 for the season with five shutouts, shifting his goals-against average to 0.53.

The contest played out physical the entire 90 minutes with 39 total fouls and five yellow cards.

Shots for the match were scattered throughout the lineup as nine Gulls totaled 17 for the match. Forwards Trevor Sharpe and Benjamin Aryeetey led Salisbury with four shots, two on target, a piece.

The men finish off their home stretch next Saturday, Oct. 5, as they take on new conference foe Penn State University-Harrisburg at the SU Soccer Complex. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
