Field hockey gets two goals from Cindea, Shobe in 5-0 win at Frostburg State

Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 win at Frostburg State University on Saturday, collecting the victory in its first Capital Athletic Conference game of the year.

Salisbury (10-1, 1-0 CAC) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as senior Karen Cindea broke the ice just 3:02 into the contest, capitalizing on an assist from junior Courtney Jantzen.

The Gulls doubled the lead 77 seconds later when Jantzen put home a tally off senior Mallory Elliott's helper for the 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

The offensive pressure did not waver from Salisbury in the early minutes of the game, as the Sea Gulls would attempt six more shots and receive a pair of penalty corner chances in the next 12 minutes, but could not stretch the lead until under 10 minutes was showing on the clock.

In the 26th minute, sophomore Abbey Shobe struck with the third Salisbury goal, with an assist from senior Summer Washburn, and the Sea Gulls took the 3-0 lead into halftime, dominating in each statistical category. Salisbury held a 19-2 edge in shots through 35 minutes and had seven penalty corners to the Bobcats' one.

It would take just four minutes into the second half before the Gulls would score again, with Cindea getting her second of the day, on another assist from Jantzen, and Salisbury would cap the scoring with another Shobe goal, from sophomore Casie Preisch in the 48th minute for the 5-0 lead.

Shobe's two goals and four points in the game are both career highs.

The Sea Gulls outshot the Bobcats (5-8, 0-2 CAC) 35-6 in the game, while the Salisbury defense, led by Washburn, juniors Breck Sullivan and Amanda Cooper and sophomore Hannah Miller, allowed just five shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Clewer made one save in her 46:30 in the cage, while freshman Tressie Windsor made a career-high four saves in 23:30 in net.

This season, the Salisbury defense has allowed just 10 goals, while the Sea Gulls have scored 62 times.

Salisbury returns home on Tuesday night, welcoming Christopher Newport University to Sea Gull Stadium. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
