Gulls record 10th victory in 5-0 shutout over Saints

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – After falling for the first time all season last weekend, the Salisbury University men's soccer team bounced back nicely with a 5-0 shutout over Capital Athletic Conference opponent Marymount (Va.) University Thursday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex.

The Sea Gulls (10-1-3, 4-1 CAC) had their fair share of opportunities in the opening 10 minutes, but couldn't connect on any. The momentum ultimately came from junior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli in the early parts of the game, who turned away two lined shots by the Saints' Tristan Munoz within 30 seconds of each other to keep Marymount (3-11, 1-4 CAC) off the board.

In the 17th minute, Salisbury finally connected. Senior forward Tanner East, with the ball up the left, dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot past Saints' goalkeeper Logan Cropper for the first score of the game.

Although the Gulls only put up one goal in the first half, SU outshot the Saints, 11-6, and the high shot attempts paid off in the final 45 minutes, as Salisbury blasted home four more.

It only took six minutes off the restart for the Gulls to connect on their first. Junior forward Josh Burdin played a lined ball from the left corner to the back post where it met the head of East. East redirected the header over Cooper's outstretched hands and to the left post where senior midfielder Stephen Poorman was waiting for the header finish.

The goals continued less than six minutes later, as junior midfielder Dennis Runikera, Jr., came in on a deflected header attempt by senior forward Benjamin Aryeetey, ripping a hard shot into the right side of the goal.

In the 75th minute, freshman forward Brooks Zentgraf received a ball from junior midfielder Michael Feeney, and with quick precision, dribbled past the keeper and blasted a shot into the back of the net, pushing the lead to 4-0.

The final tally of the game was recorded after a foul inside the 18-yard box blew the play dead and Salisbury was awarded a penalty kick. Coming up from the backline was junior Danny Maskell, who connected on the left-side finish for his first collegiate goal.

The Sea Gulls' defense, led by seniors Jeff Byrnes and Logan Becker, sophomore Nathaniel Eiben and freshman Mike Kramer, limited the Saints to just nine shots, six on target. Staedeli recorded his 10th victory of the season, protecting the net for 67:58 and pulling in five saves. Senior Nial Krach tended the goal for the remaining 22:02, making one save.

Salisbury takes the pitch for its next match on Sunday, October 19, as the Gulls travel to Frostburg State University for another CAC contest. First touch is set for 2 p.m.
