McNeill's late-game heroics give Gulls 1-0 victory over Bobcats

Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. – In a long, hard-fought game that saw just six total shots on goal, junior defender Cy McNeill connected on the lone goal of the game in the final seven minutes of regulation to boost the Salisbury University men's soccer team over Frostburg State University Sunday afternoon.

It was a defensive battle through the full 90 minutes, but the Sea Gulls (11-1-3, 5-1 CAC) broke the scoreless draw in the 84th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Nicholas McCrea started the series on a ripped shot on the left side, but was redirected by a defender. With the ball finding the foot of junior midfielder Michael Feeney, the junior played the ball over to McNeill. After playing a one-two pass with sophomore Justin Lee and making a quick move past the defense on the left side of the 18-yard box, McNeill saw Bobcat goalkeeper Hassan Mostafa playing near post, so the Chevy Chase, Maryland native played it far post to score his first goal of the season and the second of his collegiate career.

With both defenses playing great soccer, 15 shots were taken for the game, eight by the Bobcats (8-4-3, 3-2-1 CAC) and seven by the Gulls.

The SU backline, led by McNeill and seniors Kyle Westbrook, Logan Becker and Jeff Byrnes, limited Frostburg to just three on goal of the eight shots taken, all of which were pulled in by junior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli

Staedeli recorded the victory in net, tending the full 90 minutes for three saves and the team's 10th shutout of the season. Through 15 games, the junior has only given up five goals, as he sports a 0.34 goals-against average, good enough for seventh best in the country in the category.

With the regular season winding down, the matches are getting more important for the Sea Gulls. Next up is Capital Athletic Conference-foe Christopher Newport University, who sits right behind SU in the standings at No. 2 in the league. The match is set for Wednesday, October 22, at the SU Soccer Complex for the final home game and senior day. First touch is set for 3:30 p.m.
