Albornoz sets career high, Hackett moves up in scoring list in Gulls win over Saints

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team claimed a 68-49 victory over Marymount (Va.) University Wednesday night at Maggs Physical Activities Center, snapping a five-game skid to the Saints.

The Sea Gulls were led by the junior guard duo of Anna Hackett and Sarah Seipp, with both registering 17 points in the game; Hackett moved up to No. 12 in the programs all-time scoring leaders in the game, as she now has 1,190 points to pass former Sea Gull Jessica Latour.

Sophomore forward Kathy Albornoz got SU going with a layup, sparking an opening 15-4 run. Seipp followed with a jumper, and junior forward Becca Himes added a layup, allowing the Gulls to build a 6-0 lead before Marymount would score.

After Seipp hit two free throws and drained a three,  Hackett would add a layup to push the Sea Gulls' lead to double figures, 15-4, to cap the opening stretch. Salisbury's press defense was able to keep the Saints' offense at bay in the opening minutes to build the lead.

With 8:22 left in the first half, Hackett added another layup to get Salisbury up 21-9, but the Saints fought back to cut the lead to 21-14.

From there, Salisbury ended the half on a 13-2 run, sparked by a Hackett three; she netted a jumper later in the run to lead the team with five points in the stretch, allowing SU to take a 34-16 lead at the half.

At the break, Salisbury was shooting 66.7 percent from the floor, and its defense had forced nine Marymount turnovers.

Seipp opened the second half with a layup after gathering a steal, one-of-five on the night to lead the team.

Salisbury was able to keeps its lead, with the help of nine second-half points from Albornoz, setting a career-high 11 in the game.

Albornoz hit two free throws and a layup in a four-point stretch to keep SU ahead, 45-26, before hitting five more from the stripe in the final 3:12 of the game to help cap the win.

Himes also reached double figures in the game with 12 points, while Hackett led with eight assists and Albornoz pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Sea Gulls now look forward to their final regular-season game, as SU travels to Frostburg State University on Saturday for a 1 p.m., Capital Athletic Conference contest.
