Lange leads Salisbury to 14-3 victory over Greensboro in first game with team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 4-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team opened its season with a road victory on Sunday, defeating Greensboro College 14-3.

The Sea Gulls were led by senior attackman Rhett DePol and senior midfielder Donovan Lange with four points each. Lange had a team-high three goals in his first game with the Gulls, while DePol and sophomore attackman Brady Dashiell tied to lead the team with two assists each.

The scoring opened at the 8:49 mark with Lange assisting senior long-stick midfielder Zeke Smith for the first goal of 2014, giving SU a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, senior midfielder Brandon Kendrick found the back of the cage for his first goal, before junior midfielder Sean Fitzgerald would give the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

With 8:06 left in the first half, Lange netted his first score, beginning a run of three goals in two minutes for the Gulls. DePol added the second, and Kendrick scored again, giving Salisbury a 6-0 lead.

Greensboro answered with two goals before the half, giving SU a halftime lead of 6-2; at the half, Salisbury led in shots, 22-19, and ground balls, 28-16, while both teams won 5-of-10 faceoffs.

The Sea Gulls found their groove in the third quarter, scoring seven-straight goals to take a 13-2 lead into the final period.

Lange took a pass from Dashiell to start the run at the 12:27 mark, before Dashiell would score his first on a man-up goal, assisted by DePol. Another Lange score from Fitzgerald sandwiched Dasheill's goal, putting the Gulls ahead, 9-2.

Sophomore midfielder Davis Anderson netted two goals, while junior attackman Mike Kane and DePol each scored one in the remainder of the quarter.

After Greensboro would convert on a man-up chance for its first goal of the second half, with 12:22 left in the fourth quarter, Kane scored his second to close the game for Salisbury.

DePol, Kane, Anderson and Kendrick all scored two goals to tie for second on the team.

Salisbury will return to Sea Gull Stadium for its first home game on Saturday to host No. 12 Lynchburg College; the game is set for 1 p.m.
