Sea Gulls down Bullets, 11-9, in top-20 matchup

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The No. 4 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team added another victory over a top-20 opponent on Saturday, defeating No. 19 Gettysburg, 11-9, on the road.

Gettysburg got on the board first, with a goal at the 13:25 mark of the opening quarter. Sophomore midfielder Thomas Cirillo answered to tie the game with Salisbury's first goal just under three minutes later.

The Bullets took a 3-1 lead with two more scores, but with 4:29 left in the quarter, senior attackman Rhett DePol brought the Gulls back to within one at the end of the first quarter.

After another Gettysburg score to start the second, Salisbury trailed 4-2, but two goals from junior attackman Mike Kane that sandwiched a score from senior attackman Luke Phipps got SU the lead. Both players scored two goals in the game, while Phipps added an assist for three points.

Kane netted his first, before Phipps tied the game with a man-up goal. DePol zipped a pass from behind the cage to Phipps on the crease for the score.

Salisbury took the lead with Kane's next goal, 5-4.

The Bullets tied the game, but Salisbury took a one-goal lead into halftime after Phipps picked up a deflection in front of the crease and put home his second score.

At the half, Salisbury led in shots, 21-13, and won 7-of-13 faceoffs.

The second half began with senior long-stick midfielder Zeke Smith picking up a ground ball on a Bullet turnover, driving down the right side and putting SU ahead by two, 7-5.

Junior midfielder Sean Fitzgerald netted the Gulls' second goal of the quarter, before Gettysburg would answer with two scores to cut SU's lead to one at the start of the fourth quarter.

Gettysburg tied the game, 8-8, off the opening faceoff of the final quarter, but three-straight Salisbury goals would cap the win.

DePol netted a 15-yard rip to regain the lead, before senior midfielder Donovan Lange would score the same way less than a minute later.

With his team-leading third goal, DePol capped the win with 6:50 left; the Chester, Md., native finished with a team-high four points.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Taylor played the entire game, making 11 saves, for his fifth victory of the season.

Salisbury will play its next game against Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday, March 9 in Bethesda, Md., at Landon School; the game is set for 1 p.m.
