Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team controlled play at Lynchburg College on Saturday, outshooting the Hornets 26-3, finding the back of the net three times in the second half to secure a 4-1 victory.
The Sea Gulls (7-0) attempted two shots and had four penalty corners in the first 18 minutes of the game before junior Samantha Johnson's insert set up senior Mallory Elliott for the game's first goal, with 18:41 left in the first half.
Salisbury would attempt 10 shots, with 12 penalty corner chances in the first half, but Elliott's goal, her fifth of the season, was the only score of the first 35 minutes.
The Hornets (3-4) took just one first-half shot, which got past goalkeeper Rachel Clewer, but senior Breck Sullivan was on the goal line to record her first defensive save of the year, to maintain the 1-0 Salisbury lead.
Sullivan, along with sophomore Hannah Miller and junior Amanda Cooper led the Salisbury defense, which gave up just three Lynchburg shots the entire game.
It took 13 minutes into the second half before the game's second goal was scored as Johnson inserted on a penalty corner, and ended up finishing off the insurance goal off an Elliott assist. The shot for Johnson was one of a career-high seven on the afternoon.
Johnson has now scored 10 goals this season, and has registered at least one point in each game this season.
The lead was stretched to 3-0 minutes later when senior Summer Washburn found freshman Natalie Wilkinson for a tally in the 52nd minute, and Washburn added her own unassisted goal, to cap the Salisbury scoring with less than five minutes remaining.
The Hornets would spoil the Sea Gull defense's bid for a fourth shutout this season, finishing off their first goal with 18 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Sea Gulls will be on the road again this Wednesday, September 24, traveling to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins University. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
