Jantzen first Sea Gull since 2009 to score four goals as field hockey rolls to fourth victory

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team finished off another successful weekend picking up a 9-0 win against Virginia Wesleyan College in final-day action of the Salisbury University Invitational at Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday.

The Salisbury midfield, led by sophomore Hannah Miller and senior Summer Washburn, controlled the game, not allowing Virginia Wesleyan to get the ball consistently into its offensive end. The Marlins never had a possession in the circle in the first half, and would not attempt a shot during the entire contest.

The Sea Gulls (4-0) got the scoring started just four minutes into the game when they earned the first penalty corner of the day. Junior Samantha Johnson inserted to senior Mallory Elliott at the top of the circle. Elliott ripped a shot toward the left post, which junior Courtney Jantzen tipped home for the 1-0 lead.

The score was the start of a career day for Jantzen, who led the Sea Gulls with a career-high four goals and an assist.

It was the first of many tipped goals for the Sea Gulls, who found themselves positioned nearly perfect on the offensive end throughout the game.

Moments later, a similar play allowed sophomore Becca Rinaca to get in the scoring column as Johnson inserted to Elliott, who shot toward the right post and Rinaca tipped it home for the insurance goal.

The 2-0 lead became three goals on Salisbury's next shot when Rinaca took an attempt from the right side which was deflected up into the air. Jantzen was set up in front of the cage, and batted the ball, from waist high, in for her second of the afternoon and a 3-0 lead.

Jantzen finished off an early hat trick in the 19th minute, taking a pass from Elliott at the left post. Jantzen was able to control the ball, and quickly slipped it past Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Lindsay Baker for the 4-0 lead. Elliott finished the afternoon with three assists.

The first-half scoring was capped two minutes later as Rinaca got her second, collecting a loose ball in front of the goalkeeper and pounding it home. Rinaca would finish with two goals and two assists on the day.

The Marlins' closest thing to an offensive chance in the first half came in the closing seconds, but as the ball was sent into the circle, junior Breck Sullivan cleared it to keep the first half clean for the defense.

The Sea Gulls would extend their lead to six goals with another strong showing on the penalty corner, as Elliott ripped a shot into the lower left corner for her second of the year, and Jantzen got her fourth of the day a few minutes later, finishing a centering pass for the 7-0 lead.

Jantzen becomes the first Sea Gull to score four times in a game since Lauren Correll did so on September 27, 2009 against Kenyon College. Through just four games this season, Jantzen has already scored nine goals and added three assists for 21 points.

The tip-in goals continued throughout Salisbury's scoring as Johnson would make a diving deflection on a Jantzen centering pass and freshman Jenna Caldwell put home the game's final score on a Chandler Littleton assist in the 57th minute.

The Salisbury midfield and defense stood strong, not allowing a single shot attempt and just two penalty corners for the Marlins (1-3).

The Sea Gulls will be off until next Saturday, September 13, when they travel to No. 12 Messiah College. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
