SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team hosted Frostburg State University for their senior day and played to a scoreless tie on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half, both teams traded opportunities in a back-and-forth, exciting 45 minutes. Salisbury (9-3-3, 4-0-3 CAC) dominated the early parts of the half, working the ball well in its offensive zone as Matt Greene, Zach Johnson, and Michael Feeney displayed excellent chemistry and probed the Frostburg backline.

In the latter parts of the opening stanza, Frostburg (10-4-2, 4-2-2 CAC) started to slow down the Salisbury attack and got solid possessions of its own. The Bobcats nearly broke open the scoring with 30:30 on the clock as Carvell Akuffo redirected a ball with his head that had eyes for the right post. Senior keeper Drew Staedeli was able to track the shot - initially having to back pedal - and dove backwards to the post to keep the game tied.

At half's end, both goalies were tested with five shots on goal. Salisbury was awarded with six corner kicks, to Frostburg's lone corner in the half.

In the second half, the pace of the game was slowed down but each team still came up with solid chances to score.

In the 69th minute, Ryan Gruss got a great shot on cage that beat the Frostburg keeper, but the Bobcats had a defender behind the goalie who was able to body the ball to keep it out of the net.

Junior defenders Kevin Miller and Nathaniel Eiben came close to sparking a Gulls' goal several times. Miller used high energy rushes up the field to test the Bobcats; while Eiben got a head or foot or seemingly every set piece Salisbury had.

Two minutes into the second overtime period, Leslie Umunna found himself at the top of the 18 with just a defender between him and the goalie, and plenty of space to operate. Umunna displayed a full array of ball skills and got the defender tied up to the point where he could rip a shot. Umunna was inches from glory, as the shot went just wide of the right post.

In the overtime periods, Salisbury got the only shot on goal.

For the second straight game, Staedeli set a career high in saves, as he totaled double-digit saves for the first time with a 10-save performance.

The Gulls return to action on Monday, October 26 when they travel to Southern Virginia University for a makeup CAC contest. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
