Field hockey locks up No. 2 seed in CAC tournament with 5-0 win against Frostburg St.

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University field hockey team collected a 5-0 victory against Frostburg State University on Friday afternoon in the regular-season finale for each team, securing a home game in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury went on the offensive throughout the game, barely allowing any looks at goal for the Bobcats, but the Sea Gulls could not find the back of the net early.

One of the better chances came 13 minutes into the contest when junior Hannah Miller ripped a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. The try was blocked, but went right to senior Courtney Jantzen on the left post. Jantzen took a pair of swipes at the ball, but both shots were turned away by Frostburg State goalkeeper Nicole Leighty.

Moments later, Salisbury (12-3, 5-1 CAC) would break through, capitalizing on the team's 11th shot of the day. Jantzen made a break down the left side with the ball, around the Frostburg State defense, and curled in toward the left side of the cage. She sent the ball into the middle where junior Abbey Shobe was ready to finish off her second goal of the year for the 1-0 lead.

Just after checking into the game, late in the half, freshman Emily Lemanski led a quick break for Salisbury in transition. She dribbled into the circle and found senior Sam Johnson on the left side, but Johnson's try just missed to the left.

Salisbury doubled the lead with three minutes left in the half, when Johnson got another chance, and would not miss. She inserted on one of the team's seven first-half penalty corners, sending the ball to junior Annah Brittingham. Brittingham settled the ball and sent it right back to Johnson who stepped into the field of play. Johnson did not give Leighty a chance to kick the shot away, lifting it over the Bobcat goalie for the 2-0 lead.

Salisbury dominated play in the opening half, not allowing the Bobcats to gain possession in their offensive circle once in the first 35 minutes of play.

Three minutes into the second half was the first time the Bobcats would get control of the ball and able to get into the circle, just entering the right side of the circle before senior back Amanda Cooper pushed the ball out. Frostburg (8-10, 1-5 CAC) stopped the clear and pushed back into the scoring zone before Brittingham sent the ball back out.

Cooper and fellow backs Breck Sullivan and Jessie Todd saw little action near goalkeeper Tressie Windsor throughout the game. Windsor did not face a shot in 61:54 in net.

Miller put home Salisbury's third goal of the day, finishing off a flurry of shots by the Gulls. Leighty turned away offerings from Brittingham, Johnson, and Shobe, but the final rebound came to Miller out in front, and she ripped a shot home for her fourth goal of the year.

The Sea Gulls' final two goals came on the first goals of the year for sophomore Natalie Wilkinson and Lemanski. Wilkinson, at the left post, took a perfect cross from junior Casie Preisch for her score before Lemanski put home the first goal of her career in the 65th minute.

Lemanski finished of a rebound from a Johnson shot, stopped by Leighty – one of her 19 saves in the contest – to finish off the scoring.

Frostburg State attempted five shots in the closing four minutes of the game, two of which were on target. Freshman Eliza Pauk, who came on in relief of Windsor, saved one and Cooper made a defensive save on the final Bobcat shot to preserve Salisbury's ninth shutout of the year.

With the win, Salisbury clinches the No. 2 seed in next week's CAC tournament, and will host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, November 4 against third-seeded Christopher Newport University. That match is slated to begin at 6 p.m., at Sea Gull Stadium.
