Stork, Berquist lead Sea Gulls to CAC win over Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The No. 12 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team rebounded from Wednesday's loss with a 29-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon.

Eighteen different Sea Gulls found the goal in the game, with senior Adam Stork and freshman Chase Berquist both tallying hat tricks to lead the team.

Junior Thomas Cirillo netted the first score two minutes and 59 seconds into the game, kicking off a first quarter in which the Gulls only needed 16 shots to put away 10 goals, while the Salisbury defense held the Knights to no shots in the first period.

Sophomore Carson Kalama tallied the second, before a goal by senior Kyle Goss at the 8:04 mark began a stretch of six goals in six minutes. Goss and Kalama both added their second in the run, while freshman Garrett Reynolds, senior Mike Kane, and Stork netted one, each, to cap the stretch for an 8-0 lead with 3:39 left in the first.

Goals from senior Sean Fitzgerald and sophomore Andrew Ternahan ended the quarter for the 10-goal lead.

The Sea Gulls got right back to work to start the second, with sophomore Cameron Maples winning the opening faceoff and taking the ball down to score 14 seconds into the quarter; the team won 25-of-37 faceoffs in the game, with Maples taking 10-of-13.

Cirillo pushed the lead to 12-0 on an assist from Berquist, before two-straight goals from Berquist by the 9:33 mark built the advantage to 14.

Sophomores Brendan Bromwell and Kevin McDermott added the 15th and 16th tallies, before Southern Virginia would get on the board with 5:55 remaining in the half.

McDermott added the final goal of the first half, giving him the first two of his 2015 season, while Salisbury took a 17-1 lead into the half. At the break, the Gulls led in shots 30-5 and ground balls 27-5, while winning 15-of-20 faceoffs.

The third quarter began with a goal from Kane, beginning a 7-0 period in the Gulls' favor. Senior Jake Rotman tallied two in the frame, while freshmen Daniel Long and Brooks Eibner each added the first scores of their careers; Long also added two assists on the day for his first three points as a Sea Gull.

Sophomore Brendan Walker netted his first to start the fourth quarter, as sophomore Griffin Melzer also tallied his first goal in the period. Stork scored to complete his hat trick at the 9:14 mark, and freshman John Wheeler capped the Salisbury scoring with the first of his career.

Senior Connor Anderson tallied his fifth win in the game, playing the entire first quarter and never facing a shot. Four Salisbury keepers saw time in the game, with senior Dan Feeney making three saves to lead the team.

Salisbury continues on the road in its next game, taking on Wesley College in Dover, Delaware on Wednesday, April 1; the game is set for 7 p.m.
