Sweeney's hat trick leads field hockey to 11-0 win at Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team went on the offensive on Thursday afternoon, scoring four times in the first 17 minutes at Virginia Wesleyan College, and never looking back going on for an 11-0 win.

Salisbury (5-0) dominated possession of the ball throughout the contest, with junior Becca Rinaca tallying the game's first goal, just seven minutes into the contest, off senior Jessica Crew's assist.

The lead doubled four minutes later when Crew found the back of the cage with senior Amanda Cooper notching her first assist of the year on the play.

Senior forward Sam Johnson got into the scoring column with a pair of goals in less than a minute, putting home the team's third goal after a flurry of shots from the left side, ultimately lifting the ball over the head of Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Skye Swain and in for the 3-0 lead thanks to a Hannah Miller assist.

Johnson received a pass from sophomore Natalie Wilkinson in front of the net, less than 40 seconds later. Johnson redirected the ball past Swain to make the score 4-0.

Seniors Courtney Jantzen and Breck Sullivan got involved in the scoring later in the half. Jantzen put home an unassisted goal and Sullivan converted on a penalty stroke before freshman Catherine Sweeney scored from the left side for the first goal of her career.

The Sea Gulls put up 27 shots in the first half while the Salisbury defense, led by Sullivan, Cooper and junior Annah Brittingham, did not allow a first-half shot attempt for the Marlins (1-4).

Virginia Wesleyan would get a handful of shot attempts in the second half, but could not get one past freshman Eliza Pauk, who made two saves while playing the second 35 minutes in goal in relief of sophomore Tressie Windsor, who got the start and the win.

After a pair of saves off a penalty corner in the 43rd minute, Sweeney was in the right spot on the left side of the cage, and pounded home the ball for her second tally, and the 8-0 lead.

Brittingham and freshman Kristen Yingling added late goals, with Yingling's tally being the first of her career before Sweeney capped her hat trick with a goal in the 63rd minute.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action next Wednesday, September 23, hosting Johns Hopkins University in a contest slated to begin at 6 p.m.
