SALISBURY Md. – Down 11-8 heading into the fourth quarter, No. 5 Salisbury used six goals to overcome its deficit and take down No. 2 Lynchburg College in non-conference play on Wednesday evening 14-11 at Sea Gull Stadium.

The first quarter opened up with Lynchburg getting three quick goals under seven minutes into the contest, with two of the tallies coming from the stick of reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Austin Stewart.

Senior Thomas Cirillo broke the ice for the Gulls a little over 10 minutes into the game with his first of four goals on the afternoon. Salisbury tacked on two more in a row, from Brady Dashiell and Brendan Bromwell, who capped the run with a left-handed alley dodge that he stuck just under the cross bar.

The Hornets added two more at the end of the quarter to go up 5-3 going into the second quarter.

Following a penalty by the Gulls at the end of the first quarter, Stewart put in his fourth of the game on the man up early in the second. Lynchburg added one more tally to go up 7-3 before Salisbury stopped the Lynchburg four-goal run with a change of pace.

Just before the half, attackmen Chase Berquist and Kevin McDermott got goals just seconds apart near the end of the half to send the teams to the locker room.

At the half, despite the 7-5 deficit, Salisbury led in most major categories: groundballs (17-7), shots (26-14), turnovers (5-8), and faceoffs (8-for-13).

Under two minutes into the second half, Cirillo took an alley dodge down the right side and ripped a shot high-to-high for the score. Classmate James Burton followed Cirillo's marker shortly after with one of his own as he took his defender down the left side, stopped on a dime, rolled to go to his right hand and let it go low-to-low just inside the right pipe. Following Burton's goal, Lynchburg scored four of the next five goals to end the third quarter up 11-8.

After going 0-for-6 shooting in the first-three quarters, Carson Kalama came to life in the fourth quarter, putting goals past the Lynchburg keeper 30 and 46 seconds into the last stanza as faceoff man Duncan Campbell was able to continue his dominance. Three minutes later, Kalama struck again with a man-up tally. Kalama was low on the crease and Burton fed him from the top left and buried it low to bring the game to 11-11.

With Kalama's fourth-quarter hat trick, Salisbury continued to pour it on in a small time frame. Less than a minute after Kalama's third, Nathan Blondino froze his defender with a quick move off a Cirillo feed and finished from the outside to give Salisbury its first lead of the game. Just 36 seconds after Blondino's first, Garrett Reynolds added his first. Cirillo capped off the six-goal fourth with a shot he tucked inside the left pipe with 7:13 left in the quarter.

Salisbury controlled the pace of play down the stretch with Kyle Tucker being able to shut down Stewart, and Will Nowesnick covering his mark, Aaron Murphy, with great success.

Joshua Dean picked up the win with 41:04 minutes in net and recorded three saves. Dean entered the game in the second quarter after Anthony Stavrakis got the start. Chris Hawley got the loss between-the-pipes with an 11-save performance for Lynchburg.

Campbell ended the game with an 18-26 mark from the center X to go along with four groundballs. Seniors Andrew Ternahan and Davis Anderson led the way with five groundballs a piece, many of which came as the wings for Campbell on the faceoffs. Ternahan added two caused turnovers to finish his season premier.

In the end, Salisbury outshot the Hornets 50-27, picked up 28 groundballs to Lynchburg's 17, and went 3-for-4 on extra-man opportunities as opposed to Lynchburg's 1-for-2 performance on the man-up.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, February 20 when Montclair State University comes to Salisbury for a 1 p.m., faceoff.
