Men's soccer clinches CAC playoff spot with 6-1 victory over Wesley

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team scored a season-high six goals en route to a 6-1 win over visiting Wesley College in the regular season finale Wednesday afternoon, clinching a Capital Athletic Conference playoff spot in the process.

Salisbury (8-8-2, 4-3-2 CAC) wasted little time getting on the board, scoring just 3:36 into the match. Sophomore Ryan Spadin found a wide open Brooks Zentgraf in the middle of the box, and Zentgraf capitalized on the opportunity with a shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later the Sea Gulls would score the eventual game-winner off the foot of freshman Joseph Scarpinato. Nick Njuki sent a pass near the midfield line into open space, and Scarpinato was able to beat the keeper on the breakaway for a 2-0 lead.

Wesley (3-15, 1-8 CAC) would pull within one in the 32nd minute following a free kick from Nicholas Hood. The free kick found its way through the box and bounced around before finding Chimaobi Ikwuagwu, who sent a bullet into the top of the net to make it a 2-1 game.

The Gulls would extend the lead to 3-1 just 1:10 before the half. Spadin made a nice run down the right side and sent a cross from the baseline into the front of the goal. Freshman Josh Woozley was waiting wide open in front of the net for his first career goal.

Salisbury doubled up Wesley 6-3 in shots in the first half, while each team took one corner kick.

The maroon and gold would add to their lead midway through the second half. After the Wesley defense was unable to clear the ball in the box, sophomore Stephen White got a touch on the ball and put it into the left side of the net for a 4-1 lead.

Just over two minutes later the freshmen duo of Peter Gutoskey and Dylan Parks would pair up for another Salisbury goal. Parks sent a pass into Wesley territory, and Gutoskey was able to score on the breakaway goal for a 5-1 advantage.

The Sea Gulls would round out the scoring with White's second tally of the day in the 82nd minute. Freshman Cameron Ament sent a pass from the left side through the box and White's one-timer found the back of the net. White has totaled four goals on four shots this year, tying him for the team lead in goals with Nick Carrington.

The Wolverines and Sea Gulls both took six shots in the second half, while Wesley held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Trevor Brookhart made two saves in just over 71 minutes of action and freshman Benjamin Gentry faced no shots in the first appearance of his career.

Salisbury will advance to the CAC playoffs and play a first round game on Saturday, October 28, against York College of Pennsylvania. A start time and location of the match has yet to be determined. We will release more information once it is available.
