Sea Gulls, Lions battle to scoreless draw in men's soccer

Box Score

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team played Penn State University-Harrisburg to a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The first half was a defensive battle, with the two teams combining for just five total shots, none of which were on goal. The Lions (12-1-1, 0-1-1 CAC) held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks but were unable to generate any shots off the corners.

Robbie Budd recorded the first shot on goal for either team in the 56th minute, but it went straight into the hands of Penn State Harrisburg goalkeeper Nicholas Guglielmetti.

The Lions had their first opportunity at goal in the 62nd minute off an Ethan Hoover header following a corner kick, but Salisbury goalkeeper Trevor Brookhart was there to corral Hoover's header.

Matt Hawkins had a chance to put the Sea Gulls (8-1-2, 1-0-1 CAC) on the board with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, but his one-timer following a sequence of passes was turned away by Guglielmetti, sending the match to overtime.

Salisbury finished regulation with 10 shots, half of which came on frame, while the Lions recorded six shots, with two coming on goal.

Josh Woozley attempted the only two shots in the first overtime period for the Sea Gulls, but both were saved by Guglielmetti. The Lions were able to get off just one shot, with Hoover's attempt getting blocked.

Despite playing down a man for the final 6:21 due to a red card, Penn State Harrisburg outshot Salisbury 2-1 in the second overtime period, though neither team was able to convert.

The Salisbury defense, led by Trent Hofmeister, Alex Eiben, and Alton Walker, limited the Lions' offense, which came into the game averaging 3.46 goals and 15.8 shots per game, to just nine total shots and three on goal. Brookhart saved all three shots that came his way to record his seventh shutout of the season.

Salisbury returns home to face St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday, October 10 for the first of three straight home matches. The Sea Gulls and Seahawks are scheduled to begin play at 4 p.m.
