Mitchell nets hat trick in 6-0 shutout over Gwynedd Mercy

SALISBURY, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team rebounded in a big way after their first loss of the season last weekend with a dominating 6-0 shutout win at home on Saturday over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury scored the opening goal in the 8th minute when Camryn Dennis' penalty corner went to Jillian Hughes at the top of the arc. Hughes passed the ball over to Tara Daddio who blasted the ball towards goal. Rachel Domanico deflected the ball past the Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper.
  • McKenzie Mitchell netted her first goal of the day with five minutes left in the first half when she was able to corral a ball in front of the cage and pushed it to the back of the net.
  • A minute later, Gwynedd Mercy's Abi Kennedy tried to clear out the ball in front of her goal but Daddio took the clearance and scored Salisbury's third goal of the contest.
  • Mitchell registered her second goal of the game in the latter part of the third quarter. Mitchell's initial shot was saved by Kennedy but Mitchell secured her own rebound and scooted the ball past Kennedy.
  • Mitchell notched her hat trick in the 51st minute when Olivia Hennessey found a wide-open Mitchell in front of the cage and one-timed her shot into the cage.
  • Allie Davis netted the final goal of the contest with a minute left in the game off an insert from the attacking midfield deflected off of Kennedy over to Davis on the far side of the cage.

GAME NOTES

  • Salisbury outshot Gwynedd Mercy, 21-1 with 16 shots on target by Salisbury.
  • McKenzie Mitchell led the Salisbury offense with three goals on four shots.
  • Tara Daddio added three points of her own on a goal and an assist.
  • Rachel Domanico and Allie Davis each added a goal while Olivia Hennessey recorded an assist on Mitchell's goal in the fourth quarter.
  • Dom Farrace saved the only shot she faced in the second quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Mitchell notched her first collegiate hat trick to set a new career-best.
  • Mitchell also matched her goal total (6) from a season ago.
