WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's golf team flirted with program history and put itself in a position to finish on the podium after the first round of The Melee, hosted by Premier Collegiate Tournaments, on Sunday afternoon at Ford's Colony Country Club.
The Sea Gulls shot their second-best round of the modern era with an 18-over 302, three strokes back of the record. SU currently sits seventh out of 11 teams in the field but is within five strokes of four other teams in third-place McDaniel (297), fourth-place Virginia Wesleyan (300), and Drew and Dickinson (301), who are tied for fifth.
ROUND NOTES
- Ryan Henneman carded a three-over 74, good for a tie for 12th in the field of 60 individuals. Henneman opened his day by making par on eight straight holes, following it up with a pair of back-nine birdies on 12 and 18.
- Colton Thomas and Declan Gustavson entered the clubhouse tied with each other and others for 22nd after shooting four-over 75s. Thomas sank par on 15 holes during the round, while Gustavson hit par on 14 holes.
- Alex Langford gave the Sea Gulls four scores in the 70s after carding a seven-over 78, good to tie for 35th. Langford birdied on eight and 11.
- Peter Carnegie posted the SU drop score with a 19-over 90, tying for 57th overall.
The Sea Gulls will play their final round of the fall season as they wrap up The Melee on Monday morning at Ford's Colony.
