Henneman wins Melee; Men’s Golf vaults to third in fall finale

Sophomore cards seven-under 64 in round, clinches Sea Gulls’ first modern title

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's golf team put a capper on its fall schedule in grand fashion: led by tournament champion Ryan Henneman, the Sea Gulls improved four positions to earn a third-place finish after the second and final round of The Melee, hosted by Premier Collegiate Tournaments, on Monday afternoon at Ford's Colony Country Club.

Salisbury shaved 16 strokes off its first-round total, carding two-over 286 for the lowest single-round team score in modern program history. The improvement enabled the Sea Gulls to vault from seventh to third in the 11-team field, earning a spot on the podium by finishing one stroke better than fourth-place Dickinson (589).

ROUND NOTES
  • Ryan Henneman finished at the top of the 60-man leaderboard, bringing home the first individual hardware in the modern era of SU men's golf by shooting four-under 138 across the 36 holes.
  • Entering the day tied for 12th with several others, Henneman carded a seven-under 64 with nine birdies against just two bogeys, smashing his own modern SU record for the lowest single round. Henneman – who improved on his first-round score by 10 strokes – opened the round with a birdie and was two-under through the front nine; he then shot five under on the back nine, including birdies on five of the final six holes.
  • Leading Dickinson's Collin McMahon-Shea by one stroke headed into the final fairway, Henneman coolly birdied the par-four 18th, not only securing his individual title by two strokes but also breaking Salisbury's tie with Dickinson to secure the outright team bronze.
  • Colton Thomas shot a two-over 73, hitting par on 14 of the 18 holes to shave two strokes off his round one card. Thomas finished tied for 12th with a six-over 148.
  • Declan Gustavson tied for 16th at seven-over 149 after carding a three-over 74 on Monday.
  • Henneman, Thomas, and Gustavson each finished the tournament with three of the top six two-round event scores in the SU modern era.
  • Alex Langford improved by three strokes from round one to two, swinging a four-over 75 with a pair of front-nine birdies. Langford slotted in a tie for 26th overall with an 11-over 153.
  • Despite posting the SU drop score, Peter Carnegie matched his own round-to-round program record by producing an 11-stroke improvement en route to an eight-over 79, including two birdies, for the day. He tied for 54th with a 27-over 169.
