Men’s Golf shoots program best at abbreviated FSU tournament

Sea Gulls’ 299 marks best round of modern era; Thomas ties for third individually

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Battling the elements through a day-plus of play, the Salisbury University men's golf team established a new modern program record in the first and only round of the George Cangero Invitational, hosted by Farmingdale State University over Saturday and Sunday at Eisenhower Park.

The Sea Gulls finished fourth in a field of 11 teams with an 11-over team score of 299, edging out fifth-place RPI (301) and sitting within striking distance of hosts Farmingdale State (295). The total marks Salisbury's lowest score in a round since the program's revival last season, improving upon its 2024-25 best (304) by five strokes.

Inclement weather on Long Island forced several delays during the first round on Saturday, with all five SU golfers waiting until the crack of dawn on Sunday to finish their 18 holes; the team shot one under as a collective in the rainy early hours. Though scheduled to play 18 more on Sunday afternoon, tournament officials canceled the final round due to continued inclement weather.

ROUND NOTES
  • Colton Thomas secured a podium finish in his first collegiate action, shooting a one-under 71 to tie for third in the field of 62. The James M. Bennett High School graduate sank five birdies, including the first two holes and the 18th.
  • Ryan Henneman tied for 13th with a two-over 74, picking it up on the back nine by birdying three holes, including the 16th and 18th to finish strong.
  • Declan Gustavson finished one shot back of Henneman, registering a three-over 75 to tie for 17th. He birdied on four and six.
  • Alex Langford took a tie for 37th with a seven-over 79, while Gage Bandy posted Salisbury's drop score with a 10-over 82, good for a 46th-place tie. Langford and Bandy each posted one birdie.

The Sea Gulls will have a quick turnaround and head to Hershey, Pa., for the single-round Elizabethtown Invitational on Tuesday. Tee time from Hershey Country Club is penciled in for 11 a.m.
