Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The sixth-ranked Salisbury
University field hockey team scored five unanswered goals, after
falling behind early, against Capital Athletic Conference foe St.
Mary's (Md.) College on Sunday afternoon en route to a 5-1 season
opening victory. This was the first game on the new A-Turf field at
Sea Gull Stadium for the SU field hockey team, who played before an
estimated crowd of 225.
SU senior Jami Gobao scored a game-high
two goals, all in the second half, and freshman Kandice
Hancock had three assists in her debut for the maroon and
gold. The Sea Gulls also received goals from seniors
Danielle Twilley and Ashley Twigg
and sophomore Lauren Correll.
Salisbury (1-0, 1-0 CAC) saw St. Mary's (0-1, 0-1 CAC) strike
first as Seahawk senior Ali Femi found the back of the Sea Gull
cage at the nine minute mark. The unassisted goal gave the Seahawks
the brief 1-0 lead.
The Sea Gulls battled back and scored back-to-back goals
sophomore Beverly Beladino assisted Twigg's goal
and Hancock recorded her first of three straight assists on the
Correll mark. Salisbury took a 2-1 lead into the half.
SU goalie Maria Ramoundos made six saves in the
game as the Gulls outshot the Seahawks 29-13. Salisbury also
controlled the penalty corners, 25-7. St. Mary's goalie Emily
Richards made 16 saves in the losing effort.
Salisbury will next travel to Newport News, Va., to face No. 13
Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
This is a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III second round
playoff game where the Captains won 2-1 in overtime to snap
Salisbury's bid for a fourth straight national championship.
