SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University field
hockey team renewed its annual rivalry with The College of New
Jersey on Homecoming Weekend before a crowd of 400 under the lights
Saturday evening at Sea Gull Stadium. The two teams scored
back-to-back goals in the first half and went into overtime tied
1-1 before the No. 2 Lions scored the game-winner six minutes into
the extra period.
No. 9 Salisbury (10-3) got on the board first with an unassisted
strike from junior Lauren Correll in the 32nd
minute of the game. The Lions answered back, less than two minutes
later, to tie the game as the teams went into halftime knotted at
one.
The TCNJ (11-1) goal by forward Katie Reuther was the first goal
allowed by the maroon and gold in six games. Sophomore goalie
Anna Cooke (6-1) made five saves in the game but
recorded her first loss of the season. TCNJ sophomore Leigh
Mitchell (three shots) scored the game-winning goal with a shot
from the right side of the Sea Gull cage into the left corner at
the 75:51 mark.
The Gulls outshot TCNJ 11-10 but did not record a shot in
overtime. Junior Beverly Beladino and freshman
Alison Bloodsworth each placed three shots on goal
in the game. The two teams played a scoreless second half as both
teams demonstrated tremendous midfield play which made it difficult
to maintain possession and get a good look at the cage.
Salisbury's three losses on the season have all come by one goal
and all against teams ranked in the top eight in the national
coaches' poll. TCNJ leads the all-time series with Salisbury,
22-11-1.
The Sea Gulls will resume Capital Athletic Conference play on
Tuesday, October 21, with a road trip to Stevenson University for a
4 p.m. game.
