GRANTHAM, Pa. - Junior All-American
Lauren Correll set the tone early on for the
second-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team on Saturday
against No. 6 Messiah College. The forward scored two unassisted
goals in the first five minutes of the game as the Sea Gulls led
2-0.
The Falcons (3-1) rallied to cut the SU lead to one at the half
and then scored two goals in the second half to earn the 3-2
victory. This is the second straight loss for Salisbury (5-2)
against a top 10 team in four days. Salisbury has not lost
back-to-back games since the 2006 season when SU lost three
straight to No. 9 Rowan University, No. 1 Messiah and Catholic
University.
Salisbury had more shots (13-to-12) and penalty corners
(10-to-seven) than Messiah in the game. SU outshot the Falcons 10-6
in the first half and had six penalty corners. Correll led all Sea
Gulls with five shots followed by midfielders Courtney
Webster (three shots) and Kandice Hancock
(two shots). Sophomore back Katie Fost also had
two shots in the loss.
Correll scored her first goal a minute into the game and then
added her second four minutes later. Messiah got on the board with
a Julie Barton unassisted goal at the 22nd minute.
In the second half, Falcon forward Lauren Tennis (one goal, one
assist) scored in the 46th minute as she beat sophomore goalie
Claire Davey-Karlson (six saves). Nine minutes
later, Davey-Karlson was replaced by fellow sophomore goalie
Anna Cooke (two saves). Messiah scored the
game-winner with five minutes left in the game when Tennis assisted
Elizabeth Ziegler for the score.
Messiah goalie Ashley Mowery made 10 saves, seven in the first
half, in the victory.
The road doesn't get easier for Salisbury as the Sea Gull next
travel to Glassboro, N.J., to face No. 9 Rowan on Wednesday,
September 24, under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
