SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University
field hockey team defeated Capital Athletic Conference foe York
(Pa.) College 3-0 on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull
Stadium.
Salisbury (7-2, 2-0 CAC) claimed a two-goal lead 17 minutes into
the match thanks to two unassisted goals by Sea
Gull sophomores. Midfielder Kandice Hancock
got the Gulls on the board first with a blast to the left corner of
the cage at the 12 minute mark. Fellow midfielder and former
high school teammate Courtney Webster
followed closely with a goal of her own, five minutes
later.
Sea Gull sophomore goalie Anna Cooke played all 70
minutes in the cage for SU and held the Spartans (5-6, 2-3
CAC) scoreless. Cooke and the rest of the Sea Gull defense
prevented York from getting a single shot on goal and allowed just
one shot attempt.
The maroon and gold forced the Spartan defense into several tough
situations in the game as SU outshot YCP, 16-1. The Sea Gulls took
18 penalty corners compared to York's three. York goalie Claire
Rekitzke made 11 saves on the day while midfielder Case Knauss
prevented a Sea Gull goal with an excellent defensive save in the
second half.
SU junior Lauren Correll scored the game's final
goal midway through the second half (52nd minute) as she deflected
a hard hit pass from freshman Tara McGovern into
the back of the Spartan cage. Correll leads the Sea Gulls with
eight goals this season.
Salisbury will remain in conference play as it will host Rt.
13 rival Wesley College on Wednesday, October 1, at 6
p.m.
