Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 2 ranked Salisbury
University field hockey team captured its 15th
consecutive Capital Athletic Conference Championship title on
Saturday afternoon, defeating Mary Washington by a margin of 2-1.
Salisbury has not lost a conference championship since 1994. The
victory marks the 10th straight win of the season for
the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury (16-1, 6-0 CAC) dominated the game, outshooting Mary
Washington 16-1. The Sea Gulls also had a staggering 21 penalty
corner opportunities, compared to the Eagles' two; eight of those
corners came in the first nine minutes of play. The match was a
highly physical one, as the teams committed a combined 154 fouls.
The Eagles (12-8, 4-2 CAC) had their first and only goal of the
day in the 12th minute, as Mary Washington midfielder
Emma Jones shot the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Anna Cooke
(Ann Arbor, Mich.). The Sea Gulls were able to
regroup, though, as senior forward Lauren
Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) answered back with a
breakaway goal in the 33rd minute of play. Salisbury and
Mary Washington entered halftime tied, 1-1.
The deciding goal for Salisbury came in the 64th
minute, when sophomore forward Caitlin
Walker (Fallston, Md.) made a pass to senior
midfielder Michelle Rowe (Elkton, Md.), who put
the ball into the back of the box. Rowe's goal, her first of the
season, couldn't have come at a better time as she led her Sea
Gulls to the victory. "Certainly this is a great victory for us,"
said head coach Dawn
Chamberlin. "We've had a lot of adversity to overcome,
dealing with injury and illness this season."
The maroon and gold will now await the announcement of the NCAA
tournament brackets, set to be released on Monday, Nov. 9.
