Box Score SALISBURY, Md. -- The No. 2-ranked Salisbury
University field hockey team came away with its second straight win
against a top-10 opponent with a victory Wednesday night, topping
No. 8 Johns Hopkins University, 5-1, at Sea Gull Stadium. The win
is the Sea Gulls' 15th straight in regular-season
play.
Salisbury put two quick goals in the back of the cage to open up an
early 2-0 lead. A scramble in front of the cage led to a penalty
stroke opportunity for junior midfielder Kandice Hancock
(Westover, Md.) with 5:27 gone in the game, she beat
Hopkins keeper Sophia Tieu for the first goal of the match.
Senior forward Beverly Beladino (Putnam Valley,
N.Y.) registered an assist on a score by senior forward
Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) tally just 23
seconds later. Beladino sent a long cross in front of the cage,
where Correll collected and flicked it across the line for the 2-0
edge. Correll broke away on a long run late in the first half,
scoring off a Hancock assist to push the lead to 3-0 at
halftime.
Hopkins (4-1) would not threaten much in the first half,
registering just three shots in the opening 35 minutes, to
Salisbury's 14 shots. The Blue Jays only got one shot past
sophomore Salisbury goalkeeper Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor,
Mich.), on a penalty stroke in the 46th minute,
cutting the lead to 3-1. Cooke made two saves in the match.The Sea
Gulls (6-0) got second-half tallies from Hancock and sophomore
forward Alison Bloodsworth (Delmar, Md.).
The Sea Gulls' next match will be Saturday at 1 p.m., when they
take on No. 1-ranked Messiah College at Sea Gull Stadium.
