Box Score YORK, Pa. – The top-ranked Salisbury
University field hockey team traveled to the Keystone State on
Saturday afternoon for a contest against Capital Athletic
Conference opponent York (Pa.) College, coming away with a 4-2
victory. The win improves Salisbury's CAC record to a perfect
4-0.
Scoring began early for the maroon and gold as sophomore
forward Erica
Henderson tipped in a feed from junior
back Tara
McGovern just 1:14 into the contest. Just over three
minutes later, Henderson scored again - this time off of an assist
from junior forward Caitlin
Walker - to give Salisbury a 2-0 lead with more than
29 minutes left to play in the first half.
That Sea Gull lead would increase in the 33rd minute as freshman
midfielder Emily
Voshell ripped a shot that found its way to the
back of the Spartan cage. Voshell's goal, the first of her career,
was Salisbury's only unassisted score of the day and gave the Sea
Gulls a 3-0 edge going into the second half.
A mere 43 seconds into the second half, the Sea Gulls struck
again. A shot by junior midfielder Courtney
Webster, assisted by Henderson, made its way
past Spartan goalkeeper Maggie Schlauch (six saves) to improve
Salisbury's lead to four goals. Two late-game goals by York
narrowed that lead to two, but the Sea Gull defense finished what
it had started and preserved the win.
The Spartans (5-5, 2-3 CAC) fired off a total of six shots, four
of which came in the second half; Salisbury took a total of 13
shots. Additionally, the Sea Gulls held a 10-3 advantage in penalty
corner opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Anna Cooke
played all 70 minutes in the cage for Salisbury, making three
saves.
With more than half of their regular season behind them, the Sea
Gulls appear to be running on all cylinders. They have outscored
their opponents 29-6 so far in 2010.
Salisbury (8-1) will remain on the road for its next two games,
beginning first with a contest at 14th-ranked Rowan
University on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
