Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – The top-ranked
Salisbury University field hockey team continued its four-game road
streak on Wednesday evening, traveling to Glassboro, N.J., to
square off against 14th-ranked Rowan University in what marked the
Sea Gulls' third-straight contest away from Sea Gull Stadium. After
a scoreless first half, Rowan (8-4) would capitalize on a penalty
stroke in the 54th minute of play, and that single goal was all the
Profs would need to earn a narrow 1-0 victory against Salisbury
(8-2, 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference).
It was clear from the start of the game that both teams came to
play; the single-tally final score was indicative of a solid
defensive effort by both squads. Both teams took a combined 19
shots in the entire game - in contrast, Salisbury alone has
averaged 19.1 shots per game so far this season. Eight of
Salisbury's 12 shots were on goal; additionally, the Sea Gulls held
a slim 5-4 advantage in penalty corner opportunities against the
Profs.
One of those penalty corner chances came with just 13 seconds left
to play in the contest as senior Katy Lamboni
inserted the ball in a valiant attempt to even up the score.
Sophomore Erica
Henderson ended up with the ball and ripped a shot
with no time left on the clock, but the shot was high. The Sea Gull
offense kept Rowan goalkeeper Jen Goldberg on her toes, forcing her
to make eight saves. Junior keeper Anna Cooke made
one save.
The last time Rowan beat Salisbury was back on Sept. 26, 2006
with the Profs earning a 2-1 victory. Following that loss the Sea
Gulls played the Profs three times, earning three victories and
outscoring them 8-1.
The maroon and gold will have a week to regroup before traveling
to face CAC opponent Hood College on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. Salisbury
will return to Sea Gull Stadium on Oct. 16, Homecoming Weekend, to
square off against 11th-ranked The College of New Jersey. Game time
is set for 6 p.m.
