Nine Gulls, nine goals; Sea Gulls shut out Mustangs

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team bounced back from its first loss of the season, on Sept. 18, with a resounding 9-0 victory against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Stevenson University on Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium.

First-half statistics highlighted Salisbury's aggressive offense. The Sea Gulls (6-1, 2-0 CAC) had nine penalty corner opportunities while outshooting the Mustangs 20-0. Senior Katy Lamboni scored the first of Salisbury's seven first-half goals just two minutes into the contest, ripping a shot past Mustang (4-5, 0-3 CAC) goalkeeper Kara Zimmerman. Just 1:42 later, senior Kandice Hancock connected on a penalty stroke to increase the maroon and gold's lead to two. The remainder of the half consisted of Sea Gulls ripping more shots and scoring more goals; juniors Alison Bloodsworth, Caitlin Walker and Courtney Webster, as well as sophomore Kristina Fusco, all added to Salisbury's first-half scoring totals. The final tally of the half, off of the stick of sophomore Kelly McIntyre, came with just 14 seconds left in the period. The goal was McIntyre's first as a Sea Gull.

There was another first for Salisbury, this time in the cage, as freshman Amanda Lindsey collected her first collegiate win. The Williamsburg, Va., native played 52 minutes in goal and a stellar Sea Gull defense prevented her from having to make a single save. Junior keeper Anna Cooke played the last 18 minutes of the contest, notching three saves.

Junior Danielle Lehman and senior Camile Walker added a pair of goals for the Gulls in the second half. Sophomore Erica Henderson and freshman Hannah Castelow each dished out two assists apiece in the victory.

It was truly a team effort for Salisbury, with all 30 players seeing time on the field and 16 of them taking shots. The win marks the fifth shutout victory of the season for the Gulls. Salisbury has outscored its opponents 24-4 so far this year.

The maroon and gold have three straight CAC contests ahead of them, the first of which will be on the road against St. Mary's (Md.) College on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. Salisbury will then return to Sea Gull Stadium on Sept. 30 to square off against Wesley College. That game time is set for 6 p.m.
