Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team jumped on No. 17 University of Mary Washington early on Saturday afternoon and never looked back, earning a 4-1 victory in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Salisbury opened the scoring just six minutes into the contest on an unassisted tally from senior Courtney Webster. The lead became 2-0 when junior Erica Henderson showed her hand-eye coordination, batting a ball out of mid air and into the back of the cage for the two-goal edge in the 14th minute.
Less than two minutes later senior Alison Bloodsworth gave the Gulls another unassisted goal for a 3-0 lead which was not in doubt through remainder of the afternoon. Webster was able to add one more first-half goal, with seven minutes left before halftime, off an assist from senior Caitlin Walker allowing the Gulls to take a 4-0 lead at the break.
Salisbury (10-0, 4-0 CAC) dominated the first half statistically, holding a 10-2 edge in shots, while each team was awarded five penalty corners.
The Eagles (9-3, 2-2 CAC) took four penalty corners in the second half while the Sea Gulls had just one corner opportunity. Each team attempted six shots in the final 35 minutes while Mary Washington scored the half's only goal, with less than nine minutes to play, to cut the lead to 4-1.
The goal was the first allowed by the Salisbury defense in more than 225 minutes of play. Salisbury senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke turned away five shots to collect the win.
Salisbury will be back in action at home on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts No. 8 Rowan University at Sea Gull Stadium, beginning at 6 p.m.
